The reason for the increase
One of the theories to explain the exceptional size of the hole in the ozone layer this year is related to a volcanic eruption.
In January 2022, the Hunga Tonga volcano erupted, releasing excess water vapor into the atmosphere. Surprisingly, this vapor emission occurred after the ozone hole ended in 2022.
Scientists believe that water vapor released by the volcano’s eruption may have increased the formation of polar stratospheric clouds.
These polar stratospheric clouds are where chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) can react and accelerate the destruction of the ozone layer.
Furthermore, the presence of water vapor contributes to the cooling of the Antarctic stratosphere, which, in turn, intensifies the formation of these clouds and strengthens the polar vortex.
Are there still possible paths?
The Montreal Protocol, established in 1987, prohibited the use of substances harmful to the ozone layer, such as chlorofluorocarbons. However, even after the ban, the hole in the ozone layer persists and the ozone layer will probably not return to its original state before 2050.
The widening hole in the ozone layer highlights the complexity of atmospheric interactions and the continued need for monitoring and action to protect our atmosphere.
As scientists seek to understand this year’s phenomenon, efforts to mitigate emissions of substances harmful to the ozone continue to be a priority to preserve the health of our planet.
