WhatsApp is the world’s most popular instant messaging application. With this popularity comes great responsibility. Fortunately, the FaceBook-owned company offers a long list of security features to tackle potential concerns. WhatsApp offers end-to-end chat/voice call/video call encryption. Over the years, WhatsApp has added several options to secure your account. Some include the ability to turn off read receipts, biometric authentication, the ability to control who can see your profile picture, contact information, status, and more.
Some privacy-focused users may limit their WhatsApp access by enabling certain security functions. The app may cause you to not see profile picture, contact information, status, read receipt and more.
It is standard behavior among tech savvy users. However, it may confuse some users who are not aware of WhatsApp’s privacy and security settings.
In this post, we will guide you on how some WhatsApp users use their privacy settings and why you can’t see the contact details or pictures of some WhatsApp contacts in the app. Lets start.
We will talk about three scenarios where the contact information of a WhatsApp user cannot be seen.
1. When Someone Didn’t Add You As a Contact
As you know, WhatsApp uses the contact number to add users to the messenger. You may have saved someone’s contact number by name, but if the other person has not added you as a contact on their device, you may not be able to see some of their details on WhatsApp.
WhatsApp’s privacy settings play a big role. They are found under WhatsApp > Settings > Account > Privacy. If you select ‘Everyone’, anyone with your mobile number can see your profile picture, contact information on WhatsApp, which can invade your privacy.

Most users only allow their contacts to see their last seen, profile photo, about (contact info), and status. So in such cases, if the other person has not saved your contact number on the device, you will not be able to see their profile picture, contact information and status on WhatsApp.
2. When Someone Adds You as a Contact and Changes Their Privacy Settings
Over the years, WhatsApp has added several privacy-focused options to limit others from contacting you or browsing your profile in the app. Privacy settings can be accessed from WhatsApp > Settings > Account > Privacy.
Some users may only allow a limited number of people to access their contact information, profile pictures, statuses and last seen. You may not be able to see such a user’s contact information on WhatsApp if they have removed you from the access list.
How do they do this? Would you like to apply the same security measures on your WhatsApp account? Follow the steps below.
Stage 1: Open the WhatsApp application on your device.
Step 2: Tap the Setting icon in the lower right corner.
Stage 3: Go to Account > Privacy and you will see the default settings for your WhatsApp account.

By default, your account information such as profile picture, last seen, status and about are visible to your contacts on WhatsApp. You can go to a related menu and select Nobody to change your profile picture, about etc. You can make sure no one sees it.
3. When Someone Blocks You
This is one of the oldest and easiest ways to restrict someone from contacting you on WhatsApp. If someone has blocked you on WhatsApp, you will not be able to see their Contact Information, Profile picture, forward WhatsApp message and see their status.
If you want to block someone, open that person’s WhatsApp chat and tap their profile icon. Scroll down and select block.
To unblock users, you can unblock them by opening WhatsApp and going to Settings > Account > Privacy > Blocked Contacts.

Let’s talk about one more glaring pain point of WhatsApp users and learn how to fix them.
Limit Others Adding You as a Group Member
You may have encountered a situation when your family member or friend added you as a group member in an unrelated WhatsApp group. I hate this app. Also, there are cases where random numbers will add you to a godforsaken group and you will spend a few moments wondering why this is happening. To avoid such scenarios, you can restrict unknown people from adding you directly to a group.
Fortunately, WhatsApp has added a security option to limit others from adding you as a group member.
Open WhatsApp on your device and go to app settings. Go to Account > Privacy > Groups. Here you will see the option ‘Who can add me to groups’. By default, it is set to My Contacts. That is, anyone in your contact list can create a group on WhatsApp and add you as a member.

You can select ‘My Contacts Excluded’ to add you to WhatsApp groups and exclude annoying contacts. Unfortunately, there’s no direct ‘Nobody’ option that limits anyone from adding you to groups.
Enable WhatsApp Privacy Settings
I recommend that you review the WhatsApp privacy and security settings and make changes according to your usage. If you’re worried about others snooping on your WhatsApp chats, opt for biometric authentication on iPhone and Android.
