Nature all over the planet amazes humans with its beauty and charm. This time, a lake located in the Faroe Islandsa territory of Denmark, gained prominence due to its exuberant formation.

Lake Sørvágsvatn, which has a name that is difficult for Westerners to pronounce, is impressive because it “floats” on the ocean.

Lake Sorvagsvatn

The body of water, which draws attention due to its name and beauty, is located in the Danish territory of Vagar, which is part of the Faroe Islands. Situated between Scotland and Iceland, the place is bathed by the North Atlantic and has an area of 3.4 km².

Sørvágsvatn is part of an archipelago made up of 18 islands. It is considered the largest lake in the region, currently home to around 47,000 people.

The location is impressive, as it is positioned more than 30 meters above sea level, giving the impression of floating in the Atlantic Ocean. Check out the video below:

‘Floating’ on the sea

The impression we have when looking at Lake Sorvagsvatn is created by an optical illusion. This happens because of the elongation of the plateau which, together with the arrows of light, ends up causing this view to be “floating” over the ocean.

The largest lake in the Faroe Islands is over 6 km long and is 30 meters above sea level. This height provides an incredible view for visitors and locals alike.

Name debates

Although it is officially called Sørvágsvatn, locals are having a debate over the name of the famous lake. The debate is happening because the residents of Sørvágur, a village with just over a thousand inhabitants, are proud that it means “Sørvágur’s lake”, a tribute to the village.

On the other side are the residents of Miðvágur, also in the Faroe Islands, who continue to aim to change the name of the lake to “Leitisvatn” on the grounds that the region neighboring the body of water is called “Leiti”.

Since no decision has been made about this change to this day, the locals call the paradisiacal landscape “Vatni”, which means “the lake”.
