We are used to visualizing maps, and in the midst of this habit, we can sometimes forget that the map is, in fact, a flat representation of a sphere, or rather, a geoid what they prefer to call experts.
For this reason, it is common for there to be distortions in representations. Therefore, as technology advances, cartography, the area responsible for creating maps, follows this progress. Thus, maps have been increasingly better prepared by scientists.
A team of astrophysicists from Princeton University, in the United States, is revolutionizing cartography by presenting a reformulated version of the flat map of the Earth.
New map of Earth
This new map promises to offer a radically different perspective on the world as we know it.
The project gains prominence amid the understanding that there is no perfect representation of our planet, given the difficulty in transforming a three-dimensional surface into a two-dimensional plane.
The complexity of this challenge led cartographers to employ various mathematical techniques, known as cartographic projections, to portray the Earth’s surface with as much precision as possible.
However, even the best-known maps, such as Mercator projection and the Robinson Projection, present significant distortions, especially in relation to the size and shape of land masses.
In search of a more faithful reproduction, Princeton researchers developed a new version of the flat map of the Earth, based on the Winkel-Tripel Projection. See the image:

This projection, designed by Oswald Winkel and refined by Heinrich Tripel, stands out for minimizing area distortions and providing a more equitable representation of different parts of the globe.
By applying the Winkel-Tripel Projection, astrophysicists produced a map that reduces several types of distortions, including an equidistant azimuthal projection.
This more accurate map stands out for its accuracy in displaying Antarctica, Australia and the distances across the oceans and poles.
The researchers emphasize that this approach is a significant advance in cartography, offering a more faithful conception of the Earth.
Furthermore, new opportunities open up to understand and explore our planet in ways never before possible.
For all this, the new map promises to not only redefine our view of the world, but also inspire further discoveries and explorations on a global scale.
