The most popular social network in the world and one of the most used among Brazilians is WhatsApp. Although the platform has provided an improvement in global connectivity and has revolutionized the way we communicate on a daily basis, the application also has some limitations that can cause inconvenience to users.
Due to the range of possibilities offered by its updates and frequent access to the network, many people end up with their device’s memory occupied by WhatsApp media and data.
The struggle to maintain smartphone performance is a reality for many users, who need to adapt to limitations, as the Meta platform will not stop (at least not anytime soon) from being used in professional or personal environments.
However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel that can save your cell phone’s memory and prevent WhatsApp from filling it up. The best of all is that this can be done by anyone, quickly and just by changing four settings directly in the app! Discover some of these tips below.
4 tips to optimize WhatsApp memory and improve your smartphone’s performance

1. Managing Storage
WhatsApp offers its users a practical solution for optimizing their devices’ internal memory. It is possible to access the stored data related to the application directly on the platform.
To do this, simply open the application on the chat screen and click on the three dots in the top right corner, going to the Settings option.
Once this is done, just click on Storage and Data, then Manage Storage. This way, you will be presented with all the items saved on the device and received via message, as well as having access to the sizes of each file, being able to choose which ones you should or should not delete to free up space in your memory.
2. Save space by disabling automatic download
With WhatsApp updates, such as video messages, sending photos and files in groups, many cell phones end up having their memory occupied by media that have not even been opened or chosen for download.
What many don’t know is that it is possible to deactivate just one option and download manually, choosing which files should or should not be downloaded. To do this, perform the following steps:
- open the settings on the WhatsApp home screen, in the three dots in the upper right corner;
- go to “Storage and Data”, then “Automatic Download”;
- Now, there are several options, you must disable them all and leave the status of each box as “No media files”.
3. Clear WhatsApp cache
The phone’s cache uses memory to store temporary information that may be useful, but it also stores irrelevant data. Therefore, this cleaning must be done frequently.
To do this, simply go to the device’s settings, outside the app, and go to Storage, then Applications. Once that’s done, just find WhatsApp and delete the cache using the Clear Cache option. Be careful not to delete all the data on the device, as this will wipe out the messages as well.
The previous steps are for Android phones, while iOS phones must make a backup of the data, uninstall and install the application and only then upload the stored data.
4. Enable temporary messages
The new WhatsApp updates allowed users to change conversations to a temporary messaging option, in which a time is predefined for cleaning selected chats, as an automatic routine. This option can be activated by going to storage management and activating the feature.
