There is no denying that the computer Apple 1 triggered revolutions in the history of technology, as it was the first product officially launched by Apple. However, there is one detail that catches the attention of those who follow everything about the brand: it is very common to find this computer with a wooden case.

Why was Apple’s computer made of wood?

To begin with, the equipment developed by engineer Steve Wozniak was available only as a circuit board, without any type of protection. The company’s original idea was to offer the computer components as a kit so that technology enthusiasts could assemble it.

However, Steve Jobs managed to sell 50 units of the already assembled computer to Byte Shop, an electronics store located in California. It was at this point that the set of electronic components was housed in a Koa wood structure, totaling six units.

Today, there are even fewer examples of these wooden Apple computers remaining.

Although there is no specific explanation to justify the choice of wood as a material, it is possible that the intention was to add value to the product. After all, Koa wood is quite rare, growing only in very specific regions.

In recent years, some Apple 1 units with wooden frames have been auctioned in the United States. As expected, the sale price of these products has increased considerably compared to the original price, reaching figures as high as US$800,000 in certain transactions.

According to information updated in August 2022, there are still 62 Apple 1 units worldwide, of which 41 belong to the first batch produced by Wozniak.
