Mars exploration has never been as detailed and precise as it is now possible with the instruments on NASA’s Perseverance rover. As the vehicle roves the red planet, a small drone named Ingenuity flies through the Martian skies, providing an unprecedented view of our planetary neighbor.
Peculiar rock found on the surface of Mars
The latest discovery in Mars exploration brings with it a curious and scientific implication. As experts analyzed the images captured by the rover, they came across a strange and intriguing rock, shaped like a donut or doughnut.

While this photograph may make Homer Simpson, the well-known character from “The Simpsons,” go crazy, scientists claim to know exactly what this peculiar rock found in the Martian soil is.
Astronomers and astrophysicists in charge of reviewing the data collected by the Perseverance rover explain that the image was captured by the SuperCam Remote Micro-Imager instrument, which is on board the NASA spacecraft. They detail that this rock could very well be “a large meteorite with small parts around it”.
This discovery contributes to a better understanding of the formation of Martian soils and, if confirmed as a meteorite, could provide valuable information about the interaction between star rocks, the atmosphere and the surface of Mars.
NASA’s Perseverance rover landed on Mars on February 18, 2021. It is part of the Mars 2020 mission, whose main objective is to search for evidence of past life on Mars, collect samples for possible return to Earth and test new technologies that could be useful in future space missions.
Since its arrival, Perseverance has been exploring the Jezero Crater region, analyzing rocks, collecting samples and sending back stunning images of the Martian landscape.
The discovery of this donut-shaped rock is just one of many scientific advances and achievements that the Perseverance rover has made possible. Each new discovery and image returned from Mars brings us a little closer to understanding this fascinating planet and opens the door to future space exploration.
