The Security and Privacy options make Telegram popular among stickers and tons of other features. With Secret Chats on Telegram you can easily delete, auto-delete and even add an extra layer of security. That’s why you can see Telegram messages disappear in chat.
Telegram doesn’t take the easy route like WhatsApp and it doesn’t come down massively in terms of security like Signal. Instead, it strikes a good balance between security and convenience and gives users all the tools to protect messages.
You can see the Telegram messages disappearing from the chat. But before you fix this, you need to know why and how your Telegram messages disappeared.
Other Person Deletes Messages
In WhatsApp you have a specific time window to delete messages from both parties. And even when you try to remove messages from both sides, the recipient will indicate that the message has been deleted.
Telegram has no such limitation. You can revert to a two month old message and delete it for your convenience. Long press a message and tap the delete icon. Delete it for both users and you’re good to go.
The problem is, you don’t see any trace of the message being deleted. It is simply deleted without any indication.
Other Person Deleted Entire Conversation
Telegram also allows users to delete an entire conversation. If the other person uses this number, you will not see any chat threads in the Telegram app.
On Android, long press a conversation and tap the delete icon at the top. Enable the ‘Delete for other contact’ option and tap Delete Chat.
On iPhone, swipe left in a chat thread and tap Delete. Select ‘Delete for me and the other person’.
Once again, you won’t know when the other person deleted the chat. It just disappears from Telegram.
Clear History Automatically
This is one of the main reasons why your Telegram messages are lost. Telegram provides an option to automatically clear history in the app. You can set a timer and remove the chat from the other side after a certain time.
Here’s how to set it up so you can understand the reason behind the messages being deleted.
Stage 1: Open Telegram on your phone.
Step 2: Open any chat and tap the three-dot menu at the top.
Stage 3: Select Clear History and a submenu will open for further customization.
Step 4: enable ‘Also clear history for another person.’
Step 5: Select the auto-delete messages timeframe in the app.
You can set Telegram messages to be automatically deleted from 24 hours to 1 month. You can also create the same setup from Telegram desktop apps. Here’s how.
Stage 1: Launch Telegram on Mac or Windows.
Step 2: Click on any chat.
Stage 3: Select the three-dot menu at the top and turn on Clear Chat History.
Step 4: Select the time range and click the clear chat history button.
Step 5: Enable the option to clear chat history for the other person as well.
Now imagine a scenario where the other user activates a clear chat history for 24 hours or 1 week. In this case, you will see Telegram messages disappear automatically in the app.
Using Telegram Secret Chat
Are you using secret chat on Telegram to communicate with others? In Secret Chat, messages self-destruct in a few seconds. Mostly useful for private or confidential information.
When you start a conversation with someone over a secret chat on Telegram, you have the option to set the self-destruct timer. After that, you can set a timer maybe 5 to 7 seconds and all messages will be deleted automatically after the set time.
You will see a small popup stating the time the message disappeared in the app.

As mentioned earlier, there is no solution if the other person deletes the chat or messages in Telegram. If you come across an important message, take a scrolling screenshot of the entire conversion. Unfortunately, there is no way to export the entire chat in Telegram.
