Imagine a pillar of physical, established more than three centuries ago, is suddenly being questioned. This is exactly what Daniel Hoek, an insightful philosopher, proposes in his new study on the Newton’s First Lawalso known as the Law of Inertia.
A possible error in Newton’s First Law
According to Hoek, an error in the translation from Latin to English, carried out in 1729, may have compromised the understanding of this fundamental rule of physics.

Sir Isaac Newton published his laws in Latin in the year 1687. The subsequent translation into English included an interpretative error that remained in scientific discussions over the years.
This error revolves around the expression “unless”, which Hoek argues was mistranslated from the Latin term “quatenus”. The philosopher argues that the most accurate expression would be “to the extent that”. This semantic change may seem small, but it has significant implications.
What changes?
According to the currently accepted translation, an object at rest or in continuous motion will only change its state if an external force acts on it. Hoek suggests that this interpretation is limited, as it does not take into account ever-present forces such as gravity and friction.
If we consider Hoek’s interpretation, objects are always under the influence of external forces, which makes the Law of Inertia less of an isolated principle and more of a commentary on the interaction of forces. This also makes us reflect on the practical applicability of the First Law of Motion.
Hoek’s discoveries not only resurrect Newton’s inquisitive spirit but also instigate renewed scrutiny of the foundations of physics.
