‘Vikings’ in real life: Third Viking ship found in Norway

As incredible as it may seem, last year, a place that many believed to be empty ended up surprising the archaeologists who were exploring there. That’s because they found a Viking ship inside a tomb!

However, as of yet, they have not removed the ship from the site. However, as soon as there is official confirmation, it will be the third Viking ship found in a single region of the Norwayin Karmøy.

Furthermore, many believe that this is one of the places where Viking civilizations once existed. As far as we know, archaeologists speculate that the ship was buried around the 8th century, the time that marked the beginning of the Viking Age (793-1066).

And of the three ships, the first to find one in the region was the Norwegian archaeologist Haakon Shetelig, in 1906. However, his search for other remains did not yield many results.

However, there is a reason for this. In the view of modern archaeologists, led by Håkon Reiersen, Shetelig did not go deep enough to find the other remains exactly where the third ship was located, but now it has finally been found.

And this adventure does not end here, as the archaeologists intend to return to the site to seek more information.

From real life to the screens

Such discoveries make us realize that at some point in history there really were scenarios like those portrayed in the series “Vikings”, which tells the life of the legendary Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, who becomes a hero in his homeland and leads invasions in other lands.

The series is set in Scandinavia, a region comprising Denmark, Norway and Sweden, around the end of the 8th century and the beginning of the 9th century, the same period that archaeologists believe the ship was buried.

However, that’s not all, the “Vikings” series has a strong connection to reality, even if some aspects have been romanticized or dramatized for entertainment purposes.

Throughout the series, we see many aspects of Viking culture, such as costumes, religion, and technology. For example, it shows the role of women in Viking society, something that is often forgotten or neglected in other depictions of the culture.
