Is a toilet cleaner than a dish sponge? Study shows this could be true

Washing dishes can be a nightmare, especially when you see that huge pile of dirty plates and cutlery with leftover food. But believe me: it can get worse. It may seem strange, but sometimes, if you use a dishwasher, sponge that has been in the sink for a long time, you may end up making the dishes dirtier than they are clean.

In fact, a dirty sponge can be even more disgusting than your toilet. But don’t worry, we’re not talking about washing dishes in the toilet. Just take a look at what scientists have discovered about dishwashing sponges and you’ll definitely adopt new habits in the kitchen.

According to a German microbiology study, published in the journal Scientific Reportsdishwashing sponges may have more bacteria than toilets. The study analyzed DNA from sponges in several homes and detected about 362 types of microorganisms, more than are typically found in a bathroom.

Another study carried out at the Department of Biological Chemical Sciences at the University of Sonora, in Mexico, showed that the composition and shape of the sponge can create a perfect environment for the proliferation of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms that are harmful to health.

Due to the porosity of the material and the humidity to which it is subject, the environment becomes suitable for the life of some organisms. Although many of these agents do not cause fatal damage, some can still pose a serious risk. Among the potential dangers found are the famous salmonella and until the staphylococci.

Where is the problem?

It’s not just sponges that can pose health risks in the kitchen, as the cloths used for cleaning can also contain bacteria and microorganisms that are just as dangerous as those already mentioned.

The study explains that cross-contamination can occur in a number of ways. For example, when we use a cloth to clean a cabinet or countertop and then use it to dry dishes or even our hands, contamination can occur. Chef and scientific writer Heinz Wuth explains:

“The biggest risk is biological cross-contamination. Often, when you use the cloth, more is being contaminated than is being cleaned.”he said.

What can you do to avoid being exposed to these harmful organisms?

Researchers reveal that one of the main causes of infection is the handling of food or products without proper hygiene, and therefore, it is necessary to practice good eating and hygiene habits. Washing hands is an example, since much of the cross-contamination comes from people’s own hands.

Furthermore, knowing when to replace your sponge is essential for maintaining safety and hygiene. Many people use the trick of placing it in the microwave to increase its useful lifespan. However, Wuth explains that this method is not 100% effective.

While this trick helps to keep a sponge going for longer, it still doesn’t solve all the problems, killing only about 60% of the organisms.

But if you still want to know, the method consists of placing the sponge in the microwave for about three minutes at maximum power. It is important that it is as dry as possible, as heating it while it is still wet can end up burning you when you remove it.

Remember that this only extends the life of the object a little, but it is not the best option. Therefore, it is important to change the sponges periodically, especially when they have a bad odor, look very dirty or even have a different color. Experts recommend changing them every 15 to 30 days, or earlier if necessary.
