A recent study, published in the journal Nature Astronomy on Monday (8), suggests that diamonds can form in less extreme conditions than previously imagined.
The discovery raises the intriguing possibility of showers of these precious crystals on more than 1,900 planets beyond our Solar System.
To explore this surprising prospect, the research team broke new ground by compressing polystyrene between two diamonds and exposing them to pulses of X-ray light.
The results revealed the formation of diamonds in less extreme conditions, with temperatures around 2200 °C and pressures of 19 gigapascals, similar to those found in gas giants such as Uranus and Neptune.

The scientists highlight that the observed pressures are considerably lower than those required in previous experiments.
