Rio de Janeiro’s Procon launched an alert to the digital market by notifying several e-commerce platforms about the distribution of counterfeit products and unlicensed. Among the companies mentioned are giants in the sector, such as Magazine Luiza, Mercado Livre, AliExpress, Shopee, Amazon, Americanas and Via.
The situation aims to protect consumers and curb dishonest commercial practices, requiring compliance with certain requirements under penalty of significant fines and even suspension of sales activities in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

The sale of counterfeit, replica and imitation items has been a growing concern on e-commerce platforms. Consumers looking for authentic products often come across misleading advertisements, which leads them to purchase goods of low quality and questionable origin.
Procon Rio established clear requirements for notified companies with the aim of guaranteeing the integrity of transactions and consumer satisfaction. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in fines which exceed the R$12 million mark, in addition to the possibility of suspension or revocation of sales activities.
Notified companies have a period of 20 days to present a preliminary defense and a simultaneous period of 21 days to make the necessary adjustments to their platforms. This includes reviewing its registration policies and implementing more rigorous control to prevent the sale of counterfeit or unlicensed products.
The notification of Procon serves as a powerful warning that e-commerce platforms need to maintain an unwavering commitment to transparency, integrity and protection of consumer rights.
