The search for longevity is an old and central theme in human development. Since ancient times, people in all cultures have sought ways to live longer and better.
From the search for the fountain of youth to modern biotechnology, the history of humanity is marked by a constant desire to extend life span.
In the past, longevity was often associated with deities, being considered a gift or privilege from the gods. Mythologies from around the world tell stories of immortal beings or those who have lived for hundreds of years.
In modern science, longevity is generally considered to be a combination of genetics and lifestyle, with both playing a key role in determining an individual’s lifespan.
In the 20th century, the public health revolution and advances in medicine led to a dramatic increase in life expectancy. Vaccines, antibiotics and better sanitary conditions have contributed to reducing child mortality and the incidence of diseases that used to be deadly.
Furthermore, growing awareness of the importance of a balanced diet and regular physical activity has also helped people live longer and healthier lives.

New studies, new life
The Carle Illinois College of Medicine, since 2011, has been dedicated to a meticulous and comprehensive study aimed at unlocking the secrets to a longer, healthier life.
The results of this study, which has been carried out for almost a decade, aim to inform people about the choices and behaviors most likely to increase longevity, especially as they approach middle age, around 45 years old.
The research is based on the premise that, as we approach middle age, making conscious decisions about various aspects of our health becomes crucial to ensuring not only longevity, but also quality of life in the years to come.
The focus of the study is to guide people to make healthy and sustainable choices that can positively impact their long-term health.
The study highlights three fundamental points that, although not new, are of primary importance for maintaining a healthy life and promoting longevity.
These are: abstaining from smoking, avoiding drug and alcohol consumption and promoting a lifestyle with regular physical activity.
More than three rules
When the study compared the lifestyle habits of different groups of individuals, it was shown that those who managed to avoid smoking, excessive alcohol and drug consumption and, at the same time, maintained a physically active lifestyle had an increase of at least 20 years of life.
This is a powerful testament to the impact lifestyle choices can have on our health. However, the research also emphasizes that adopting these three healthy behaviors, while vital, is not sufficient on its own.
There are other important aspects that also need to be taken into account when seeking a longer and healthier life.
First, learning how to effectively manage stress is crucial. Intense stress has been linked to a range of health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, mental health problems and even a weakened immune system.
Furthermore, food plays a fundamental role in health and longevity. Maintaining a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole proteins, lean proteins, and healthy vitamins can help prevent chronic disease, improve energy and overall well-being, and even prolong life.
Finally, sleep quality is often underestimated in its importance for long-term health. Insufficient or poor-quality sleep has been linked to a variety of health problems.
