Buddhism is a religion and philosophy based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Buddha.
Its goal is to achieve enlightenment and freedom from suffering through the Eightfold Path, which involves right understanding, right intention, right speech, right action, and mindfulness. In addition, Buddhism focuses heavily on compassion and detachment from the ego.
However, a statue of Buddha was recently found in Egypt and left everyone very surprised, as it could change everything we know today. According to historians, due to trade exchanges, there is a high chance that this object ended up in this region.
Buddha in Rome?
According to the available information, it appears that the Buddha statue was created and offered as a form of exchange, possibly with the intention of reaching Rome. According to the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, the first place where this object was found was in the city of Berenice.
Despite measuring only 71 cm, it is possible to identify that it is a statue of Buddha, although it is somewhat damaged. Time has not spared the statue, so the arms and legs are in poor condition.
Mariusz Gwiazda, the archaeologist responsible for discovering the statue, mentioned in an excerpt that “the statue of Buddha was made of stone probably quarried in the region south of present-day Istanbul (Turkey) and must have been carved locally in Berenice and dedicated to the temple by one or more wealthy merchants from India.”
Believe it or not, this is one of the oldest traces that proves Buddha’s arrival in Egypt during that period. However, there may be other evidence, and with it, new research is needed.
