Imagine a fish who could easily earn the title of ‘Hulk’ in the marine universe.
Recently, researchers carried out studies with a peculiar species, known as medaka (Oryzias latipes), who not only has a unique style, but also displays behavior worthy of an aquatic superhero.
The study published by the portal IFL Science revealed an incredible spectacle in research aquariums, in which some medaka males sported prominent markings on their fins and sides.
But the surprise doesn’t stop there, as these brands had the power to change color in the blink of an eye.
Study on color change
To unravel the mysteries behind this phenomenon, scientists organized a series of experiments, transforming aquariums into true testing arenas.
By placing a female in the middle of two males in the first experiment, and testing the dynamics between three males in the second, the researchers created an environment worthy of a reality show of fish.
The third experiment, with two males and a female in a bright, clean tank, promised to reveal the deepest secrets of this underwater world.
The results
You results were as exciting as the experiments. Surprisingly, males showed an equal appetite for fighting regardless of the presence of females.
However, when the setting changed to a clear, algae-free tank, peace reigned, with no attacks or color changes in sight. It seems that tranquility was the key to maintaining harmony among the fish.
