About a year ago, the James Webb Telescope was launched, which would allow for a range of more detailed images of the Universe. The satellite was developed as a way to surpass the previous largest satellite for capturing images, the famous Hubble.
However, even though James Webb does indeed allow for higher quality images, as well as a greater view of space as a whole, one of its “buts” is that, unlike Hubble, it is in a gravitational field still linked to Earth, but it is not possible to carry out repairs.
So, logically, space agencies weren’t going to simply “retire” a satellite, as some expected would happen with Hubble. In reality, the satellite is still out there, going strong, even providing discoveries about deep space.
New Hubble image shows a curious ‘galaxy’
Recently, at the grand 2023 Oscar ceremony, we had the great film “Everything, Everywhere at the Same Time” as the big winner of the night.
In reverence to this, the European Space Agency (ESA) statement categorized the galaxy Z 229-15 as “Everything in one place at the same time”. But, after all, what is the importance of this galaxy?
The issue here is that, as referenced in the statement, Z 229-15 is categorized in many ways at the same time. This is because the celestial object is a galaxy, a supermassive black hole and a quasar.
But, just like the film starring Michelle Yeoh, there is a lot of confusing information at the same time. So, let’s take it one step at a time. First, the image of the Z 229-15.

Now, let’s go from the most understandable to the most complicated. OZ 229-15 is considered several things at the same time, the first of which is the simplest to understand: a galaxy.
We all know how they work. It is a cluster of stars, planets, dust and gas that are interconnected by the same gravitational field.
From here on, things start to get a little complicated, because, as everyone should also know, there is usually a black hole at the center of galaxies. However, this is where Z 229-15 starts to differentiate itself from other galaxies, as it has an Active Galactic Nucleus.
What is the Active Galactic Nucleus and how does it influence Z 229-15?
This definition is given to the centers of galaxies that have a supermassive black hole. In other words, objects of this type, when in the center of a galaxy, have an unusual brightness.
At this point, you may be wondering: but black holes don’t shine, right? That’s right, you’re absolutely right. The thing is that their gravitational force is so great that they form a huge disk around themselves.
Therefore, the matter present in this disk is heated to such a gigantic point that it emits enormous amounts of energy, that is, light.
And it is exactly this light that gives it its third characteristic, a quasar. The issue of quasars is still a little delicate because there is not much consensus about this characteristic.
But because of this, quasars are an Active Galactic Nucleus, which emits enough light to outshine the stars in its galaxy. In addition to being very far from Earth. By that, we mean extremely far away.
However, as can be seen in the image above, Z 229-15 still allows a view of its stars. Therefore, it has been classified as a Seyfert galaxy.
In other words, in the end, those responsible for the statement were not at all wrong with the comparison made between the new galaxy and the 2023 Oscar-winning film.
