How to Block Someone on Telegram

Since its launch on iOS and Android platforms in 2013, Telegram has grown from 100,000 daily active users to 55.2 million in 2021. The focus of the app is to provide its users with ad-free messaging and privacy. Telegram users can send messages to the phone book and make voice or video calls or find friends through their usernames.

The nature of Telegram makes it easy for unknown people to send messages to other users knowing only their username or phone number. However, these people can be blocked. Users can also block known contacts if they no longer want to communicate using the steps below.

How to Block a Person on Telegram

If you block someone on Telegram, they can’t message you, call you or send you media. But using this method requires the person to be in your contact list. Here’s how it works:

Stage 1: Launch the Telegram app on your mobile device.

Step 2: At the bottom left of the app, tap Contacts to show the Contacts list.

Stage 3: Scroll through the contacts list and select the person you need to block.

Step 4: Tap the Contact name to start a Chat window.

Note: If the person is in your Telegram Chat list, you don’t need to look in the Contacts list. Tap it in the chats list on the homepage.

Step 5: At the top of the chat window, tap the Contact’s Profile picture.

Note: Some people may not have a profile picture. Instead, you see the initials of the contact.

Step 6: In the new window, tap the vertical three dots showing More.

Step 7: Select Block User from the list of options shown.

Step 8: Tap on Block User on the popup asking you to confirm the blocking action.

How to Unblock Someone on Telegram

If you change your mind about blocking a Telegram contact, you can still Unblock it using the following steps:

Stage 1: Launch the Telegram app on your mobile device.

Step 2: At the bottom left of the app, tap Contacts to show the Contacts list.

Stage 3: Scroll through the contacts list and select the person you need to unblock.

Step 4: Tap the Contact name to start a Chat window.

Step 5: Tap Unblock User at the bottom of the chat screen.

How to Block Unknown Users on Telegram

If the user you want to block is not part of your contact list, the user may have found you using your username. You can still block them via Privacy Settings. Here’s how it works.

Stage 1: Launch the Telegram app on your mobile device.

Step 2: Tap Settings at the bottom right of the app.

Stage 3: Review the options under the Settings menu and tap on Privacy & Security.

Step 4: Tap Blocked Users in the next window.

Step 5: The next window shows a list of blocked users, if any. It also shows a button labeled Block user at the top. Tap this button to launch the chat page.

Step 6: Scroll through chats and select the user you need to block by tapping on it.

How to Unblock Unknown Users on Telegram

Unblocking an unknown user on your Telegram is simple and can be done through Privacy Settings. Here are the steps to do this:

Stage 1: Launch the Telegram app on your mobile device.

Step 2: Tap Settings at the bottom right of the app.

Stage 3: Review the options under the Settings menu and tap on Privacy & Security.

Step 4: Tap Blocked Users in the next window.

Step 5: The next window will show you a list of blocked users. Select the username.

Step 6: Select Unblock in the new window.
