How many cells are there on Earth? Study reveals impressive amount!

Have you ever heard that there are more stars in the Universe than there are grains of sand on Earth? What you probably don’t know is that the number of cells on Earth far exceeds the amount of stars in the Universe.

The researchers revealed that the number of cells currently in existence is estimated at one nonillion, a 1 followed by 30 zeros. That’s trillions of times more than the number of grains of sand and millions of times more than the number of stars in the observable Universe. This number is simply impressive!

Surprisingly, the vast majority of these cells are made up of cyanobacteria, single-celled microorganisms that carry out photosynthesis. These small creatures are found throughout much of the water and not just on land.

They play a fundamental role in maintaining life on Earth thanks to photosynthesis, which converts carbon dioxide into carbon compounds that provide energy for living beings.

A look into the past

The researchers also went back in time to calculate how many cells existed since the beginning of life on Earth, reaching an impressive duodecillion, a 1 followed by 39 zeros. This project was based on primary productivity, which tracks the conversion of CO2 into life-sustaining carbon compounds.

The carbon cycle is essential to understanding this estimate. Starting with photosynthesis in cyanobacteria, energy is distributed through the food chain, from smaller to larger organisms.

Cyanobacterial photosynthesis plays a vital role in this cycle, as it is the starting point for estimating the number of cells on Earth.

Future perspectives

This discovery has significant implications as it could help scientists predict how living things will use carbon in the future. From this study, we know that photosynthetic organisms have recycled all of Earth’s carbon about a hundred times throughout history.
