Dermatologist warns: people who travel by plane are more likely to have skin cancer

Everyone knows that exposure to sunlight and frequent use of tanning beds can increase the risk of skin cancer.

However, a dermatologist in the United States drew a lot of attention when she stated that even traveling by plane can present risks to skin health.

Dr. Joyce Parken stated in a TikTok video that has received over two million views:

“You should ABSOLUTELY wear sunscreen on airplanes or keep the windows closed.”

The doctor cited some research that indicates that flying frequently and without sunscreen exposes people to the risk of developing skin cancer.

A study conducted in 2015 and published in JAMA Dermatology examined the risks of skin cancer in pilots and airline crew.

Based on this, it was found that flying for 56.6 minutes at 30,000 feet exposed pilots to the same amount of UV radiation as a 20-minute session in a tanning bed.

In this sense, it is important to highlight that excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays can damage the DNA of skin cells and increase the risk of cancer.

Let’s talk about airplane ✈️ skin care! Today I am just covering INCREASED exposure to UV radiation in the plane. A research study in JAMA DERM from 2015 measured amount of UV radiation in airplane cockpits during flight and compared them to UVA carcinogenic affective doses in tanning beds. Turns out you get a heck of a lot of UV exposure as a pilot. When we’re sitting in the back, make sure to wear sunscreen or keep your window closed to reduce exposure to UVA during your flight. After all, you don’t want 1/2 of your face getting more sun ☀️ damage than the other! The more you know! Doctor’s statement impresses TikTok users

In the video’s comments, many users expressed shock at the doctor’s revelation, while others shared their experiences.

Many users have reported developing melanoma, considered the most serious form of cancer, as a result of working as a pilot or crew member. Others have also reported knowing people who have experienced similar situations.

“I was a flight attendant for 2 years and ended up with stage IV melanoma, I can confirm lol”said a social media user.

Another stated:

My pilot husband has a melanoma that grows inside the borders of a normal mole. I asked for 6 months and he finally did a biopsy.”

To avoid situations like this, it is necessary to use sunscreen and always keep the window curtains closed.
