A highly dedicated group of “Final Fantasy” fans have surprised gamers by sharing a gameplay demo from development that showcases their own vision for a remake of the ninth game.
The latest update from this passion project is a 25-minute video that provides a full demo of the game.
However, unfortunately, this is the extent of the progress made and it is unlikely that the general public will have the opportunity to play it, since the group responsible for the project has previously stated that it has no intention of releasing it without the consent of Square Enix.
Memory Project
The group, known as Memoria Project, calls its initiative a proof of concept and emphasizes that it does not want to violate Square Enix’s copyright.

The “Final Fantasy IX: Memoria Project” began in 2021, with the goal of “creating a complete remake of the first part of Alexandria in the game as a proof of concept.”
The team behind this passion project is comprised of over 50 artists, developers, and enthusiastic fans who loved the ninth main entry in the beloved “Final Fantasy” franchise.
While “Final Fantasy VII” stood out as a milestone for both the franchise and JRPGs in general, “Final Fantasy IX” also deserved an update to take advantage of current technologies, providing fans with a renewed experience of this beloved classic.
About ‘Final Fantasy IX’
Released on July 7, 2000 for the PlayStation 1, “Final Fantasy IX” was hailed as a return to the franchise’s roots, bringing back the charm of medieval fantasy games, in contrast to more modern titles such as “Final Fantasy VII” and VIII.
The game’s narrative follows a group of thieves known as Tantalus, who are tasked with kidnapping Princess Garnet from the Kingdom of Alexandria. However, they soon discover that Garnet herself, who feels trapped in her castle, wants to escape.
Throughout the plot, we are introduced to a variety of characters who have become beloved and charismatic in the history of the franchise. The highlights include the wizard Vivi, protagonist of an exciting arc, Zidane, the charismatic leader of the group, and Princess Garnet.
We also cannot forget the warrior Steiner, always clumsy and stressed, who joins Zidane’s group, even though he has the mission of taking Garnet back to Alexandria.
The game received widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences upon its release, achieving an average of 93.32 on GameRankings and 94 on Metacritic.
Additionally, it sold an impressive 5.5 million copies on PlayStation 1. “Final Fantasy IX” later received remastered versions for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Android and iOS, allowing new players to dive into this exciting adventure.
