An innovative study from the University of California delved deeper into this feline universe, unraveling the intricate facial expressions that these animals use to communicate with each other and, by extension, with their humans.

The result of the work reveals not only the irresistible cuteness of the pets, but also an emotional sophistication that many may not have imagined.

The research began when a university scientist visited a cat shelter in California, recording more than 3 hours of feline facial expressions, especially those directed at other cats.

Then, a psychologist specializing in animal behavior analyzed the recordings using a specific program called the Cat Face Action Code System.

Surprisingly, the animals showed 4 to 26 unique expressions, revealing 276 new facial gestures when analyzing muscle movements, such as open mouth, whisker movement, ear position, blinking and open or closed pupils, as well as nose licking.

To the scientists observed that the majority of expressions were friendly, representing 45%, while 37% indicated anger, and 18% were not clear about what the furry people wanted to communicate.

A curious fact was the ability of cats to change their mood in a matter of seconds, alternating between playing and angry attacks in a short time.

The research highlights the importance of understanding cats’ facial expressions for their owners. Identifying signs of anger or calm can contribute to a more harmonious coexistence between humans and felines.

For example, relaxed eyes, forward ears and a straight mustache may indicate a friendly state, but in a matter of seconds, the ears and mustache may turn back, signaling a change in mood.
