The Seattle Seahawks are going through a big change ahead of next season. Just after veteran quarterback Russell Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos, they are now releasing Bobby Wagner on the same day.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the team has already notified the veteran defender of their intentions. The move came as a shock as Wilson’s previous trade to the Broncos.
The dismissal of Bobby Wagner marked a complete overhaul of the Super Bowl XLVIII-winning Seattle Seahawks team.
While the move marked the end of an era, it can be seen where the Seahawks came from to make such an important decision. Freeing Bobby Wagner would have helped them save $16.6 million against the cap. Wagner is the Super Bowl’s all-time defensive leader, but questions about his future have arisen since their bad season last season.
The Seahawks failed to qualify for the playoffs, resulting in multiple changes to their backroom roster. “You think about what next year looks like and just what the future will bring because this was a season that I didn’t think we all had planned. We didn’t plan for the season to go like this (7-10 record). And of course there will be some changes.”
