Your smartphone these days is full of apps that you probably almost never open. Most of the time, this isn’t a problem: Just remove it to free up storage space. But if it’s bloatware, there’s little to nothing you can do. These apps installed by default on Android can certainly be disabled, but sometimes you can never reclaim the precious storage space they take up.
Unfortunately, it looks like Google has decided to add one to the list. According to journalist Mishaal Rahman, all Android builds include Google Meet as bloatware. Previously, video conferencing service was considered a “flexible” application. This means it is immediately available on the smartphone, but it is possible to remove it if you are not using it.
Google Meet becomes impossible to uninstall on Android
On the other side of the spectrum, we find the so-called “core” applications, that is, applications that are installed directly on the partition that hosts the operating system. This explains why they are impossible to remove. Therefore, Google Meet joins this club of essential apps on Android. Using the service regularly will not change anything for you. But for others we’ll have to deal with it.
There’s not much you can do to prevent this change. Other than rooting your smartphone (which we don’t recommend if you’re new to this field), it’s impossible to remove bloatware on Android. Luckily, we’re only talking about a small portion of your storage space here. Who knows, maybe this will make a few users want to get started.
Android versions released after December 13, 2023 are now required to have the Google Meet app preinstalled in the system image. This means you can disable it but not completely remove it.
