Fortnite Battle Royale’s popularity has never waned since its launch in 2017. More than a shooting game, it has become a virtual universe where young people (and not-so-young people) come together to have fun, attend events or just chat. Success that caught the attention of giant Disney Investing $1.5 billion in Epic Games studio.
The stated aim is quite simply to change the world of entertainment, because Disney promises development of a “permanent universe” Pixar uses its biggest licenses like Marvel, Star Wars and even Avatar.
Disney wants to create the virtual universe of tomorrow
Disney claims in its press release that its new “permanent universe” (not a video game) will offer consumers ample opportunities to watch, play and purchase in their favorite worlds. Players will be able to “create their own stories and experiences.” A whole program…
It’s a somewhat decent press release that suggests Disney is entering the metaverse, a term that’s somewhat obsolete in 2024. However, when we look at past collaborations within Fortnite, We can have a clear idea of what awaits us. We can think of the concerts of star singers performing directly in this virtual world, or the recent collaboration with Lego that brought to life a brand new game mode. Soon there will be a virtual Disneyland park inside the game. Epic? It is quite possible.
In any case, Disney chairman Bob Iger clearly understood the impact his brand could have in this segment. At the meeting with investors, He shared a simple observation: 90% of young people born after 1996 have played football in at least the last six months:
“I was shocked to see how much time they spent playing video games. “My conclusion was: We have to be there, and we have to be there as soon as possible.”
Clearly, We will have to wait a bit to see the results of this collaboration.
