World’s second deepest blue hole found in Mexico

The ocean floor is one of the places on the planet that humans still know little about. There are many facts uncovered by researchers that help in new discoveries, such as the existence of caves in the depths of the sea. Recently, researchers identified a new underwater cave in Mexico.

The deepest blue holes

Precisely because of its depth, there are places in the ocean still unattainable by researchers. Therefore, many technologies are developed with the aim of helping these scholars understand a little more about the immensity of the sea.

Experts say that not even 10% of this space has been discovered yet. However, new explorations are gradually allowing access to even deeper depths. The location of blue holes is an example, as they are large caves formed by the meeting of seawater with limestone.

In this scenario, there are a vast number of marine species, even with little oxygen and sunlight. Still, it is one of the most interesting environments to study life over the years on Earth, or even suggest possibilities of life on other planets with extreme conditions.

Recently, one of the largest and deepest caves was discovered on a peninsula in Mexico called Yucatan. At over 274 meters, it can be considered the second deepest blue hole in the world.

Researchers made this discovery in 2021, and the hole It was named “Taam Ja”, in the Mayan language, which translates into Portuguese as “deep waters”.

After all the analyses and studies carried out on this new underwater cave in the Mexican seas, the data and information generated by the research were presented to the magazine Frontiers in Marine Science in February of this year.

Since 2016, when it was located, the one that still holds the lead, at 300 meters, is a blue cave located in southern China, which was named “Dragon Hole”.
