Coordinated by researchers from the University of Queensland and Harvard Medical School, the research covered data from more than 150 adults from 29 different countries, collected over more than a decade. The results are a warning about the importance of taking care of mental health at all stages of life.

Understanding prevalence and challenges
The study identified a high prevalence of mental health problems, with mood disorders such as depression and anxiety being the most common.
Notably, the results showed a difference between genders, with women being more likely to develop problems such as depression, phobias specific and post-traumatic stress.
On the other hand, men had a higher incidence of disorders such as alcoholism, depression and specific phobias. This diversity of challenges makes the development of personalized mental health care strategies even more crucial.

The study highlighted that the first symptoms of mental health problems usually appear at an early age, between 15 and 20 years old. This discovery puts a special focus on the need for investment in basic neuroscience to understand how these disorders develop over time.
