In comics, something very common to happen is the exchange or updating of old superhero costumes. After all, years go by and suddenly wearing underwear over pants starts to look at least strange. However, these changes are often just to bring a new look to the character, as many of them have existed for more than a century.
Changes made to costumes are generally small, with the aim of making them more realistic or modern. Therefore, they often still maintain original elements of the superhero in question. Although there are exceptions, over the years, we have seen several versions of superhero costumes.
A current example is Iron Man, whose abilities and history allow there to be several versions of his armor. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), for example, we see several variations of the character’s armor, as well as modifications to the costumes of many other heroes throughout the films.
New Superman costume and its features
But it’s not just Marvel that makes changes to the costumes of its main heroes. Recently, in the new Superman comic, in issue no. 3, we see a new costume for the hero.
In the edition, which has a script by writer Ariana Maher and art by Jamal Campbell, we see that the parasitic villain managed to develop new powers in some mysterious way. The character can now create copies of himself of all sizes, so that they can infect people, turning them into monsters.
This happens to Superman, who ends up finding himself in need of seeking help from Lex Luthor and Livewire. With this, Livewire acts as bait to attract Parasite to Supercorp (formerly Lexcorp). This plan is intended to attract all versions of the villain to the location, including those that infect Clark.
The plan is successfully executed and Clark returns to his normal self. It is at this moment that we see Superman’s new costume and its purpose. The white and red costume was adapted from the hero’s animated series.
In both the original and current versions, the suit serves as a containment mechanism. The image from the comic below shows that the clothing closes over the character’s head, acting as protection against possible infections.
Even though it doesn’t have the character’s traditional blue color, as well as the illustrious red cape, the costume is one of the most beautiful ever worn by the DC character, in addition to having very minimalist details, but at the same time very interesting.
