Screenshots will not go unnoticed on Android 14; know more

In yet another significant update, the Android 14 introduced an innovative tool capable of detecting and notifying users when a screenshot is taken in an application.

Launched for developers on Tuesday (11/28), the new feature is now available in some applications, providing an additional layer of security.

The functionality, implemented through an API in the latest version of Android, is similar to the tool present in Snapchatwhich alerts you when someone takes a screenshot of content shared on the platform.

In addition to notifying, in certain circumstances, Android 14 can even block capture, providing an effective defense against unauthorized captures.

However, it is important to note that, for now, this function is only available in some applications, being absent from notable services such as Google Pay and Google Wallet.

A notable example of implementation is the OTTO shopping app, which incorporated the tool shortly after launch.

9to5Google demonstrated that Android 14’s screenshot detector issues a notification as soon as it identifies a screenshot taken in the OTTO app.

However, there is a relevant caveat: the alert is only triggered when the capture is made using the cell phone’s physical buttons, leaving a gap for alternative methods to bypass the technology.

From the end user’s point of view, the main advantage offered by this new function is the reinforcement of security.

Given the ability of some applications to perform covert captures, the user now has the immediate ability to identify these actions and take preventative action.

Whether blocking or deleting the responsible application, this functionality protects photos, videos, documents, emails, bank details and other personal information against unauthorized access.

In the specific case of banking appsthe Android 14 platform even allows native screenshot blocking, thus ensuring an additional layer of security for bank statements and sensitive credit card data.

It is crucial to highlight that enabling this functionality depends on developer action, underlining the need for its widespread adoption and implementation to ensure comprehensive security.
