4 Do’s and 3 Don’ts After Installing Galaxy S6 Nougat

With the Samsung Galaxy S6 Nougat update starting to pick up speed, we would like to summarize a few do’s and don’ts after installing Android 7.0 Nougat on your Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge or Galaxy S6 Edge+.

Earlier this year, Samsung started rolling out the Galaxy S6 Nougat update alongside the Galaxy S7 Nougat update and Galaxy Note 5 Nougat update.

The release is still limited to a few devices in a few regions, but we expect it to expand as we dig deeper over the year.

In response, we recently posted our pre-installation instructions and some reasons to and not install the Galaxy S6 Nougat update when it arrives for your model.

Today we want to shift gears and talk about a few do’s and don’ts after downloading and installing Android 7.0 Nougat on your Galaxy S6.

Test Your Connections

One of the first things you’ll want to do is test all your important connections, apps, and services to make sure they’re working normally.

First, check your connections. Go to Google Maps (or similar app) and test your GPS. GPS issues are common after major Android updates (especially on Samsung devices), so you’ll want to make sure everything is OK.

We also recommend keeping a close eye on your favorite Wi-Fi connections to make sure they’re stable and fast. Wi-Fi issues are also quite common after major Android upgrades like Nougat.

You’ll also want to test your Bluetooth devices to make sure they’re working properly. Test any speaker, headset or car.

Finally, be mindful of cellular data (LTE/4G) and your various other connections. If you pair your phone with a smart TV or Chromecast, check them out.

Test Your Apps and Services

Once you’re done with that, it’s time to check out your apps and services. While most should work normally after installing Nougat on your Galaxy S6, there is a potential for problems.

To grope, to look. If you notice a problem with an app, go to the Google Play Store and check for a bug fix update that you might have missed. The developers have been releasing Nougat support updates for several months now and they can help stabilize the software that is giving you trouble.

If there is no bugfix update available, try reinstalling the app that was giving you trouble.

If you notice a problem with a service you use for work or school and you have an IT department, it might be a good idea to talk to them to see if they have potential solutions.

Test Nougat Features

The Galaxy S6 Nougat update isn’t as robust as the Galaxy S7s, but the update is still packed with loads of new and useful features. You’ll want to be familiar with as many of them as possible.

Check out the key changes to the Galaxy S6’s UI and you’ll find a number of big time changes for the former flagship.

There is a new Device Maintenance mode that can help you get better performance from your device. The new mode in your device’s settings provides some useful shortcuts to performance enhancing utilities.

It offers new camera gestures that make it easy to switch between rear-facing and front-facing cameras. The Galaxy S6 Nougat update also includes a blue light filter that can help you get a better night’s sleep.

It just scratches the surface. The Galaxy S6 Nougat update is full of changes, big and small, and some of them will likely suit your daily use.

Report error

Your Galaxy S6 Nougat update is undergoing extensive testing, but that doesn’t mean you won’t run into any issues.

Nougat issues are popping up on the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, and Galaxy S6 Edge+, and we expect the list to grow as more devices receive upgrades from Samsung and its partners.

Don’t sit on your hands if you see a Nougat issue on your phone. Report the problem to your carrier and/or Samsung.

If the complaints get high enough or an engineer sees your concerns, you may see a fix for the problem in the next bugfix update of your device.

You can report Nougat bugs on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, or find your carrier’s support forums and report the issue there.

If you are using an unbranded version of this Galaxy S6, you will have to deal directly with Samsung.

Do not panic

If you encounter a problem with your Galaxy S6 Nougat update right after installation or days after installation, there is no need to panic. You will probably be able to solve your problem from the confines of your home or office.

If you have recently installed Nougat and are noticing strange battery drain on your Galaxy S6, give it a few days for it to sync. If you’re still seeing a strange discharge after two days, you’ll want to take matters into your own hands.

Don’t Trust Samsung or Your Carrier

If you’re dealing with Galaxy S6 Nougat issues, you need to be extremely proactive. You cannot rely on Samsung or your carrier for fixes.

At some point, Samsung and/or your carrier will release a Nougat bug fix update. The problem is that these releases are extremely erratic and unpredictable.

It may indeed take months before you see an update, and there is no guarantee that a fix will be on board for your particular issue. (Note: Samsung’s monthly security updates usually don’t contain bug fixes. They’re also known to cause additional issues.)

Be proactive. Educate yourself, find a good forum, tick a list of fixes, ask a friend. Trust yourself, not the companies that make the software.

Don’t Forget to Drop

Remember that you have another option.

If the performance of your Galaxy S6 starts to go wrong after installing Android Nougat, you can try Downgrade to an older version of Android.

The process is involved and will wipe all your data, but for those of you dealing with major headaches, it may be worth the effort.
