Will the English language ban in Italy happen or not? Understand what is happening

Recently, a fact caught the attention of the Italian population and was highlighted in the media. Congressman Fabio Rampelli accepted a new project whose objective prohibit the use of the English language in official documents. The proposal was presented on April 7, 2023 and caused controversy in Italy.

According to the text, those who fail to comply with the law may be fined up to 27,500 reais. In extreme cases, the fine may reach 55,000 reais, equivalent to around 10,000 euros.

Rampelli, a member of parliament who has ties to the Brothers of Italy party, is the same party as Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The proposal has sparked heated discussions about the need to protect the Italian language and preserve the country’s culture.

Official statement from Italy

Deputy Prime Minister and current Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, made a statement to clarify the situation regarding the bill proposed by deputy Fabio Rampelli, which aims to prohibit the use of the English language in official documents in the European country.

The statement was made with the aim of preventing the government’s image from being damaged by possible criticism that may arise.

Tajani stressed that the idea has no relation to the other members of the government, and that it was an individual initiative of deputy Rampelli. With this, his objective was to make it clear that Rampelli’s project is not an official position of the Italian government.

After the deputy’s announcement of his proposed law, there was a direct question asked to Tajani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, about whether Benito Mussolini’s ideology was related to Rampelli’s initiative.

In response, the minister stressed that the defense of the Italian language has nothing to do with Mussolini. It is important to note that France also implemented a law in 1994 that required official government documents, advertising, business contracts and workplaces to be written in French, allowing the use of English only when there were no French words.
