We received an extraterrestrial message (or almost) to decipher; understand

Last Wednesday (24/5), we received an extraterrestrial message in the literal sense of the word. But, contrary to what we might think at first, it was not sent by aliens. It is all part of a study on the subject.

The test is part of a project that aims to analyze how we would react if we received a message sent to us from outer space. The idea of the project is to establish standards for receiving, decoding and interpreting this type of message.

‘A Sign in Space’ Project

Visual artist Daniela de Paulis, a resident at the Search for Extraterrestrial Institute (SETI) and member of the Green Bank Observatory, is responsible for creating the project known as “A Sign in Space”. The project, which means “a sign in space” in Portuguese, is quite innovative.

The goal is to bring together the academic community and enthusiasts around the search for intelligent life beyond our planet. In this way, a network of professionals from different areas can join forces to decode and publicize the possible contact.

If we do indeed receive an alien message, global cooperation will be needed to receive, decode and interpret the message in the best possible way. In addition to efforts to disseminate it to all humanity.

The message from outside the world

Although it was just a simulation, the message was actually sent from outside the planet. The European Space Agency (ESA) probe sent a coded message on May 24th that took about 16 minutes to be received.

The Allen Telescopy Array and Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, both from the institutes where Daniela is working, captured the message around 4 pm Brasília time. Now, efforts will focus on decoding the message.

The message that the artist herself developed is a kind of enigma that must be decoded. According to her, it will not be an easy task and will require global participation from different sectors of society.
