Village in Iceland suffers from recent volcano eruption

Volcanic activities continue at full steam in Iceland. Last Sunday (14), a volcano erupted in the southeast of the country, near a fishing village, in the city of Grindavik.

The lava advanced over the surrounding area and reached houses, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Agency (IMO).

This is the fifth volcanic eruption in the country in the last three years. The last one had occurred on December 18, 2023, also in Grindavik.

This time, seismic activity began during the night. The intensity accelerated sharply and the region’s inhabitants were evacuated from their homes at around 3am local time (0am in Brasília).

According to the records, the volcano eruption it started around 8am north of Grindavik. The city is 40 kilometers from the capital Reykjavik and has around 4 thousand residents.

The volcanic activity was recorded by surveillance cameras, images that show the scale of the problem. Large lava flows came out and spread through a crack.

As it is a small city, relief and displacement work is easier. Grindavik had already been completely evacuated on November 11th as a precautionary measure.

In the days before this last episode, there were several earthquakes, caused by the displacement of magma beneath the Earth’s crust. The local community has become accustomed to living with these signs.

Monitoring

Technicians and rescuers now supervise the Svartsengi geothermal plant, located in the same area and responsible for supplying water and electricity to around 30,000 people. The site’s facilities are protected by a wall.

Iceland is located on an island located between tectonic plates (North American and Eurasian). This makes the region one of the most susceptible to volcanic activity on the planet. There are currently 33 volcanoes cataloged as active in the country.
