Since Windows doesn’t work well with third-party web browsers, many people usually give up and pass on Microsoft Edge sooner or later. But if you think that agreeing with Microsoft Edge will be the end of your problems, you are wrong. Many users have often complained that Edge is not responding or cannot download a file when it responds.
Although changing your default browser in Windows 11 is not as easy as it used to be, you can take a few steps to fix the download issue in Microsoft Edge. Let’s see how.
1. Restart Your Computer
Restarting your computer is a basic troubleshooting method that you can try before moving on to the other solutions in this list. This cleans up minor bugs and turns off background processes in Edge that might be blocking downloads.
2. Check Antivirus Settings
The antivirus on your computer usually blocks downloads from the internet to keep you safe from suspicious downloads. So, if you are unable to download files in Edge, you can take a look at the settings in your antivirus and disable any option that might block downloads from the internet.
3. Change Download Path
If you have recently changed the downloads folder path on your Edge or if it no longer exists, Edge may encounter an error searching for it. You can try changing the download path in Edge to something else to see if that works. Here’s how.
Stage 1: Launch Microsoft Edge. Click on the three-dot menu icon in the upper right corner and select Settings from the menu that appears.

Step 2: Use the left pane to navigate to Downloads and click the Change button next to Location.

Now choose a different path and try downloading the file again to see if it fixes the problem.
4. Try Incognito Mode
If you still can’t download a file in Edge despite all your efforts, you can try to download the file in the InPrivate window in Edge. If it works, one of the extensions running in Edge might be blocking your downloads. Therefore, you can try to disable them temporarily to see if you can download the files again.
Stage 1: Open Microsoft Edge and use the three-dot menu icon in the top right to go to Extensions.

Step 2: Now, turn off all the extensions installed in Edge.

Restart Edge to see if you can download files normally.
5. Run SFC Scan
Sometimes corrupt or missing system files on your computer can cause applications on your computer to malfunction. In such cases, running an SFC (System File Checker) scan can help find and replace such system files. Read on to find out how.
Stage 1: Right-click on the start menu icon and select Windows Terminal (administrator) from the menu that appears.

Step 2: In the console, type the below-mentioned command and press Enter.
SFC /scannow

Wait for the process to complete and then restart your computer to see if the issue is resolved.
6. Repair Microsoft Edge
Repairing an application in Windows is an effective way to fix problems affecting its operation. Also, it is completely safe as you will not lose any data while doing this.
Read on to learn how to repair Microsoft Edge in Windows 11.
Stage 1: Press Windows key + I to launch the Settings app. Switch to the Apps tab and go to Apps & features.

Step 2: Scroll down to find Microsoft Edge. Click the three-dot menu next to it and select Change.

Stage 3: Finally, click the Repair button to start the restore process.

Since this process involves downloading Microsoft Edge again, you must be connected to the internet for this to work. When the process is finished, Windows should automatically launch Edge. Go ahead and see if the downloads are working now.
7. Reset Microsoft Edge
If nothing works, you should consider resetting Microsoft Edge as a last resort. Doing so deletes all data associated with the app. Here’s how to do it.
Stage 1: Launch Microsoft Edge. Use the three-dot menu icon in the top right to open Settings.
Step 2: Go to the Reset settings tab and click Reset settings to default values.

Stage 3: Select Reset when prompted.

This should reset the app and fix problems with downloads.
Uninterrupted Downloads
It was. After going through the solutions above, you should be clear. If the problem persists, I suggest you take some time to switch to a better but familiar browser alternative on Windows.
