Top 5 Ways to Stop Popups in Google Chrome

Google Chrome is currently the most popular web browser with around 70% market share in the browser segment. Web technologies and websites are slowly evolving with a new set of problems that the vast majority of users have to face. Content is no longer limited to just text. Websites that offer videos, newsletters, creating user Email lists, tracking users with cookies, informing readers about new stories, and more. Almost everyone is annoyed and looking for ways to stop popups in Chrome.

Meanwhile, Google continues to add new measures to Chrome to keep the web experience simple for the end user. Websites may want to send more content to the reader, but sometimes it gets crowded and the end user can be overwhelmed with irrelevant mandatory content.

You may have seen websites asking for permission to send push notifications, videos running automatically at the bottom, pop-up cookies, notifications from other apps, and more.

Fortunately, Google Chrome has added the necessary measures to block such annoying pop-ups and ads. In this post, we will guide you through the top five ways to stop popups in Google Chrome on Windows and Mac.

1. Disable Chrome Notifications on Startup

When you install Google Chrome for the first time, it will ask for permission to send notifications on Mac. If you use Google Chrome mainly for light web browsing, reddit and YouTube, I highly recommend turning off notifications from the beginning.

You can tap ‘Don’t Allow’ notifications from the beginning to disable Chrome notifications.

Note: If you’re using services like WhatsApp or Messenger, I wouldn’t recommend disabling notifications from the start.

2. Disable Pop-ups and Redirects

Are you getting unnecessary assistants, assistants or marketing pop-ups when visiting a website? You can disable the behavior in browser settings. Google Chrome also allows you to disable redirects from one website to another.

Follow the steps below to disable popups and redirects

Stage 1: Open Google Chrome on your Mac or Windows.

Step 2: Tap the three-button menu at the top and go to Settings.

Stage 3: Go to Privacy and Security > Site Settings.

Step 4: It will open a Site Settings menu, scroll down to Permissions > Pop-ups and redirects.

Step 5: Disable the Pop-ups and redirects option.

If you want, you can allow certain sites to allow pop-ups and redirects. I allowed my local bank’s net banking website on the list. It usually directs me to the rewards store to view reward points.

3. Disable Site Notifications

You must have come across a situation when a site asks you to send notifications in the future. If you accidentally hit allow, you will be notified about every post and update that the website uploads. This is definitely not the experience a user is looking for while surfing the web.

You can respectfully decline permission to report. You can disable such behavior from Google Chrome Settings. Follow the steps below to disable site notification requests in Google Chrome browser.

Stage 1: Open Google Chrome and tap the three-dot menu at the top.

Step 2: Go to Privacy and Security > Site Settings > Notifications.

Stage 3: Disable Sites may request to send notifications from the side menu.

From now on, sites will not show the popup to send you notifications.

4. Use Guest Mode or Profile Switcher

I have encountered this situation many times. This solution is mostly useful for families with a single PC/Mac among members. Let me explain the scenario.

I share my windows laptop with my brother. He uses Google apps like Google Docs and Google Drive in Google Chrome for personal stuff. When I use Google Chrome on the same laptop, I occasionally get Google Docs and Google Drive notifications for Doc comments or edit permission notifications. In such cases, it is not recommended to turn off notifications from such services.

To avoid such notification pop-ups, you should use guest mode or add another account in Google Chrome browser.

You can tap the profile icon in the search bar and use Google Chrome as a Guest. If you are a regular user, select add > type account name, select the relevant image. It will open a separate Google Chrome profile and ask you to sign in using Google account credentials.

You will no longer receive notifications from other users’ Google apps in Chrome.

5. Use an Ad Blocker

No option in Google Chrome will block annoying automatic video ads for you. You can choose an ad blocker to restrict these videos from appearing during your web reading experience.

Media outlets rely on ad revenue to keep the site up and running. While an ad blocker can improve your browsing experience, I highly recommend only blocking ads from sites that are spamming you with ads and videos on the web page.

To block video and ad popups, you can go to the Chrome web store and download any highly rated ad blocker.
