Customizing tabs in Chrome helps to easily identify and organize tabs and increase the visibility of the active tab. There are three methods to change the color of tabs in Chrome. The first two take the help of Chrome themes, while the second uses groups of tabs.

1. Use Chrome Themes to Change Tab Color

Themes help you customize the look of Chrome to your liking. When you change Chrome’s theme, the color of Chrome’s toolbar or top bar will change. This includes the color of your tabs, the search bar (address bar), and the bookmarks bar (if enabled). Changing themes also affects the appearance of the new tab page in Chrome.

When you have many tabs open, it becomes difficult to identify the active tab. The default Chrome colors don’t help much as the color difference is negligible. This is where themes can help. Applying a different Chrome theme helps change the color of the active tab.

Here are the steps to change your Chrome theme:

Stage 1: Launch Chrome and click on the three dots icon at the top. Select Settings from the menu.

Step 2: In Settings, scroll down to the Appearance section. Click Themes.

Stage 3: The browser will take you to the Chrome theme web store. Google offers several great themes of its own. You will find them at the beginning of the Theme store. However, if you don’t like their collection, you can scroll down and choose a different theme. Click on the theme you want to activate.

Step 4: Click Add to Chrome on the theme page.

Wait for Chrome to load the theme. Once the theme is installed and activated, the color of your tabs will change.

To switch to a different theme, go to Chrome Settings > Themes. The browser will take you to your current theme’s page. Click the Themes link at the top to view other themes. Click on a different theme and hit the Add to Chrome button to apply a different theme.

If you want to revert to the original Chrome theme, open Chrome Settings. Click ‘Reset to default’ next to themes.

2. Create Custom Chrome Theme to Change Tab Color

If you don’t like the themes available in the Chrome store, you will get more color options. You can even create your color combination for themes that will help you change the tab color.

To create a custom theme in Chrome, open a new tab. Use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl + T (Windows) and Command + T (macOS) to quickly open a new tab. Make sure you don’t have an active extension for the new tab page. Click the edit icon (it looks like a pencil) in the lower right corner.

In the popup that opens, go to Color & theme. Choose the color combination from the available list. To select your colors, click on the first color icon, which is the color picker symbol. Then choose a color. Click Done to save the changes.

Fly: You can mix and match backgrounds and colors from different themes. Click on Background and choose a new image for the new tab page without changing the theme colors. You can even use any image on your computer as a Chrome background.

3. Change Tab Color Using Tab Groups

Adding a colorful highlight is another stylish way to differentiate your tabs. You will see a colored line under your tabs. This method using Tab groups will come in handy if you want to organize tabs by changing their colors.

Tab groups, recently introduced by Google, divide tabs by nature, usage, priority, etc. Helps you group by Grouping must be done manually by the user. You can assign colors to tabs under the same group. So different batches may have different colors.

Right-click the tab in the top bar to create a tab group. Select Add to new group.

A gray dot will appear on the left side of the tab. Click on it to name the tab group and assign a color.

To add tabs to an existing group, drag them to the group or right-click on them and select Add to existing group. Similarly, to remove a tab from a group, drag it out of the tab or right-click and select Remove from group.
