A climate phenomenon known as Super El Niño could have unexpected consequences for consumers’ pockets. According to Climatempo experts, this extreme climate event, characterized by an anomalous warming of the waters of the Pacific Ocean, could result in a significant increase in electricity bills.
El Niño, in its most intense form, has the potential to change the distribution of wind and humidity around the planet, directly impacting the climate of several regions. During this phenomenon, the excessive heat generated by the waters of the Pacific Ocean triggers a series of climate changes.
El Niño could generate more expenses for the Brazilian people
In Brazil, the first consequences of Super El Niño are already beginning to be felt during the winter. Temperatures are expected to rise above normal for this time of year in practically the entire country.
Therefore, this off-season thermal energy causes consumers to resort to devices such as fans and air conditioning units.
In the second half of the year, especially during spring and summer, heat waves can intensify even more. As a result, energy consumption tends to increase significantly, as more people must turn on fans and air conditioners at the same time in order to seek comfort in their homes and workplaces.
Therefore, this increased demand for electricity can have a direct impact on consumers’ electricity bills. Increased consumption leads to greater use of the electricity distribution networks, which can overload the system and result in higher tariffs to offset operational and maintenance costs.
