O Spotifya well-known music streaming service, recently revealed the launch of its first cataloged hub, titled ‘Spotify Classics’.
The newly created space, curated by Spotify’s in-house editorial team, highlights which recent albums are recognized as classics in the Hip-Hop and R&B genres on the platform.

The newly released collection includes 30 albums released from 2015 to 2024. The project challenges the definition of what a classic album is, promoting debates about how artists changed the public’s perception of what an album can and should be.
Among the titles listed are great hits such as Anti (Rihanna), Astroworld (Travis Scott), 4:44 (Jay-Z), Lemonade (Beyoncé), Freudian (Daniel Caesar) and To Pimp a Butterfly (Kendrick Lamar).
A 100% editorial work
According to Carl Chery, creative director and head of Urban Music at Spotify, the creation of ‘Spotify Classics’ was a meticulous selection process focusing on the quality, impact, influence and replay value of the albums.
The initiative seeks to promote discussion among music fans and receive opinions on the choices made.
Spotify has already donated US$9 billion to the music industry
According to a recent company statement, Spotify paid the music industry around $9 billion in 2023.
The value, which is approximately R$45 billion, has almost tripled in the last six years and represents a large part of the more than US$48 billion that Spotify has paid since its founding.
The organization also stated that it returns approximately 70% of every dollar generated by music back to the industry. Such revenue mainly comes from two sources: Spotify Premium subscriptions and ads on the free plan.
It is worth noting that payments are initially made to rights holders (record labelsindependent distributors, for example), who then pass on a portion to artists or composers, after deducting their fee or percentage.
