Get ready for a unique celestial spectacle! Soon, the sky night will receive a visit from outside our solar system. The newly discovered comet Nishimura, also known as C/2023 P1, is about to make a dramatic entrance into our cosmic neighborhood, with an inevitable fate – disappearing into interstellar space.
This intriguing comet was discovered by Japanese amateur astronomer Hideo Nishimura on August 12 as it approached the center of our solar system.
Subsequent observations revealed that the comet Nishimura is following a hyperbolic orbit, which is the result of a close encounter with a larger object like the Sun, giving it enough energy to escape gravity.
A unique interstellar journey
This could be the first and last time that comet Nishimura will pass close to here. In this regard, there are theories that it may have come from outside our star system, which would make it the third known interstellar object after Oumuamua and comet 2I/Borisov.
Another possibility is that it originated in the Oort Cloud, a distant region of comets beyond Earth’s orbit. Neptune.

Comet Nishimura will come closest to Earth on September 13th and will reach its closest point to the Sun on September 18th. As it approaches the Sun, its brightness will increase incredibly, becoming up to a hundred times more luminous.
It will shine in the night sky with a magnitude between 5 and 3, making it comparable to the brightness of an ordinary star. Therefore, the best times to observe it will be before dawn or after sunset in mid-September.
The enigma of the future
What awaits this interstellar visitor? The intense gravitational action of the encounter with the Sun can fragment its solid core. Recent images show a bright “coma” around the comet, resulting from sunlight breaking down dicarbon molecules.
However, this comet is not alone in its journey through our solar system. In January, comet 96P/Machholz 1 also approached the Sun. Despite its unique characteristics, astronomers have not yet definitively classified it as interstellar.
So, get your binoculars and telescopes out now, as this cosmic event promises to be a unique opportunity to observe a visitor from other stars in our celestial neighborhood.
