A group of scientists made an important discovery recently about some small stars, results that could affect our search for alien life. These stars have extremely powerful magnetic fields, which could make them less likely to harbor habitable planets.

Previously, astronomers believed that small, cool stars had weak magnetic fields, regardless of how fast they rotated.

However, researchers analyzed star spots on 136 stars in the Beehive cluster, and found that their magnetic fields were stronger than predicted.

Before this discovery, stars with weaker magnetic activity were believed to be better suited to harbor habitable planets.

The leader of the group that is studying the topic, Lyra Cao, said:

“We are finding evidence that there is a different type of dynamo mechanism that drives the magnetism of these stars. The next thing to do is check whether the enhanced magnetism occurs on a much larger scale.

If we can understand what is happening inside these stars as they experience enhanced magnetism, it will take science in a new direction.”
