At the bottom of the sea, below a volcano submarineresearchers have made a remarkable discovery: a hidden world filled with unique creatures.
This unexplored habitat is home to a variety of life forms never before documented, including peculiar species of worms, snails and deep-sea octopus.
Situated beneath hydrothermal vents in the eastern Pacific region of Central America, this ecosystem was revealed through exploration by scientists aboard the research vessel Falkor, using a robotic arm to examine layers of the seabed.

In 1997, a fascinating scientific discovery occurred when underwater hydrothermal vents were found at the bottom of the ocean.
These hydrothermal vents, also known as black chimneys, are underwater geological structures that release hot, mineral-rich water, heated by the interaction between seawater and volcanic rocks on the ocean floor.
In the mission, scientists used a robotic arm to clean a specific area on the ocean floor. They later placed mesh boxes over cracks in the Earth’s crust.
Later, when researchers looked inside these boxes, they found a variety of animals living beneath the cavities. This confirmed that the creatures had arrived there from depths of the ocean.
“Our understanding of animal life at deep-sea hydrothermal vents has greatly expanded with this discovery,” Monika Bright, an ecologist at the University of Vienna who worked on the mission, said in a statement. “There are two dynamic ventilation habitats. Vent animals above and below the surface thrive together in unison, depending on the vent fluid from below and the oxygen in the seawater from above.”
The researchers, whose findings will be published later this year, will continue to investigate this ecosystem delicate and enigmatic. It is considered sensitive to the impacts of future deep-sea mining operations planned in the Pacific Ocean.
“The discoveries made on each Schmidt Ocean Institute expedition reinforce the urgency of fully exploring our ocean so we can know what lies beneath the sea,” said Wendy Schmidt, president and co-founder of the Schmidt Ocean Institute, in a statement. “The discovery of new creatures, landscapes and, now, an entirely new ecosystem highlights how much we still have to discover about our ocean – and how important it is to protect what we don’t yet know or understand.”
