SCARE! Boeing aircraft is grounded after window explodes in mid-air

A airline American Alaska Airlines made a significant decision today by temporarily suspending the operation of all its Boeing 737-9 aircraft.

The measure was adopted after a frightening incident, in which a window and a part of the fuselage exploded mid-flight, resulting in a successful emergency landing. More than 170 passengers and six crew members were unharmed.

The rupture in the aircraft occurred approximately 20 minutes after takeoff, triggering the depressurization of the cabin. The crew’s immediate response, which released oxygen masks and performed a safe landing, was crucial to avoid further damage.

Given the situation, the CEO of Alaska Airlines, Ben Minicucci, stated the following in an official statement:

“Following tonight’s event on Flight 1282, we have decided to take the precautionary measure of temporarily grounding our fleet of 65 Boeing 737-9 aircraft.”

Both the National Transportation Safety Board of U.S and the Federal Aviation Administration are conducting a full investigation into the incident, as is customary for emergency landings.

Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, is actively collaborating, gathering information and providing a technical team to support the investigation.

Rough start in the skies

The Boeing 737-9 Max, which received its certification last October, is now facing a challenging time. Since entering commercial service in November, the model has already performed 145 flights.

However, the model’s recent history, marked by two fatal accidents in 2018 and 2019 that resulted in the deaths of 346 people, casts shadows on its reliability.

The Federal Aviation Administration of U.S announced this Saturday a temporary landing order for the compulsory inspection of some 737-9 model aircraft.

The measure, which will impact 171 aircraft globally, provides for inspections that should last 4 to 8 hours.

This action by the FAA reflects the severity of the incident and seeks to ensure the continued safety of flights using these aircraft.

The worldwide suspension of Max 8 and Max 9 planes in 2019, following previous accidents, highlights the sensitivity surrounding aviation safety.

Ongoing investigation

While the investigation is underway, Alaska Airlines reaffirms its commitment to passenger and crew safety.

Ben Minicucci stated that the company is “working with Boeing and regulators to understand what happened.”
