Researchers develop food-based battery; find out more

A research published in the journal Advanced Materialsin March of this year, aims to revolutionize energy generation. This is because researchers responsible for the study developed a rechargeable battery based on food.

That’s right, you read it. Scientists have created a battery made entirely of food. The prototype has the ability to generate electrical energy to power small electronic devices.

Understand everything about the food-based battery

The battery was created based on edible substances and can completely dissolve in the stomach without causing any harm to our body.

According to the researchers, the technology could be used to power sensors that monitor specific health conditions or food storage.

Furthermore, scientists also pointed out that it is possible to use it in children’s toys, making them even safer, given that there is a high risk of children ingesting batteries.

The battery’s composition is riboflavin (a vitamin) at the anode (the “negative” end) and quercetin (a supplement) at the cathode (the “positive” end).

In this sense, the electrical charge is generated by the electrolyte, which is an aqueous solution, while the separator, which prevents short circuits, is made of nori, a seaweed commonly found in sushi.

As you can see, the size of this battery is very large. Because of this, scientists are currently looking to develop and reduce its size to make it more common.

This is because practical use is still a long way off. However, through this prototype, scientists hope that there will be new developments in the area.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that they are not the only ones developing research in this area. In Sweden, a group of researchers from the Royal Institute of Technology developed a sustainable battery based on coconut, lemon and wood, capable of heating and cooling.
