However, even though routers have several functionalities, the WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) button function carries a potential risk that every user should be aware of.
This button is designed to facilitate a convenient connection to the Wi-Fi network, eliminating the need to enter the network name or password. However, this convenience can compromise the security of your network.
All modern routers have the WPS function, which originated from the WiFi Alliance and has become a basic element. This button simplifies the process of connecting devices to a wireless network, avoiding the inconvenience of typing a long and complex password. In fact, this function has made the process easier, although there are vulnerabilities.
Now, if you’ve ever come across a sticker containing a QR code on your router and questioned its usefulness, know that it is a newer alternative to the WPS button function.
The main difference between WPS and manually entering a password is the level of security. This is because, while the WPS button promotes convenience, it sacrifices the security provided by WPA2 or WPA3 keys.
Additionally, there are three main ways to utilize the WPS function, depending on the design of your router: via a physical WPS button, a PIN, or via NFC (Near Field Communication) or PCB (Push Button Configuration).

In this regard, although WPS represents a convenient tool for a fast connection, its security is seriously compromised.
Consequently, the connection methods used by WPS expose the router to possible brute force attacks, in which a hacker exhaustively searches all possible password combinations until he finds the correct one and invades your privacy.
And an alarming fact is that, when you press the WPS button, the network remains unprotected for a short period of time. Therefore, even if you do not use the PIN method, the system performs negotiations that make it equally vulnerable.
Fortunately, many brands have started disabling WPS as a default setting, requiring the user to intentionally enable it. However, the risk still exists. While WPS offers convenience, it is highly recommended that you disable it if you truly value the security of your network.
