In a recent announcement, the Whatsapp confirmed that it will soon be possible to integrate the application with other messengers, making it easier to read, receive and respond to messages on a single platform.
Dick Brouwer, engineering director at WhatsApp, explained that this move is a response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which requires interoperability between messaging platforms.
The challenge of interoperability
Brouwer highlighted the complexity of the challenge of integrating different platforms while ensuring the privacy and security of WhatsApp users.
“There is a real tension between providing an easy way to offer this interoperability to third parties while preserving WhatsApp’s level of privacy, security and integrity,” said the engineering director.

Security and privacy guarantee
The executive assured that WhatsApp is testing some ways to maintain security of user. According to Brouwer, end-to-end encryption will be guaranteed for all messages that pass through the platform.
When asked about WhatsApp’s compatibility with other applications, Brouwer emphasized that it is premature to make specific conjectures at this time.
Next steps and user control
WhatsApp’s engineering director mentioned that initially, interoperability will only be for messages, images, voice messages, videos and files.
At a later date, this capability will be extended to group calls and chats.
Finally, Brouwer stressed that this new feature will be under the user’s control.
“We are working on a solution built on WhatsApp’s current client-server architecture. This effectively means that the approach we are trying to take is for WhatsApp to document our client-server protocol and allow third-party clients to connect directly to our infrastructure.”
Each person will be able to choose which applications they want to connect to their WhatsApp account.
