News content creation gains space on TikTok

For decades, TV and radio were the main means of spreading news. With the advancement of technology and the emergence of multimedia platforms, forms of communication have also adapted to new realities. Today, it is common to consume news on TikTok, for example.

For a few years, the main video distribution platform was YouTube. But the arrival of apps like TikTok has affected the pioneer’s sovereignty.

With the Covid-19 pandemic, many people sought new forms of entertainment and, in this search, TikTok took the lead, gaining millions of users in just a few months.

The video app provides content quickly and objectively. With its growth, what was once just entertainment has taken on a new tone. Today, the platform has a variety of content types, including news.

In Madrid, a group of friends became famous after videos about current events in the world went viral. The account @ac2ality has already reached 4.3 million followers. The friends started the project after feeling bombarded by too much news about Brexit between 2016 and 2020.

One of the account’s co-creators, Gabriela Campbell, 26, now a graduate in Biotechnology, says:

“We read a lot of articles, but we couldn’t get a general understanding of what was going on. […] If it’s difficult for us, there must be more people like us.”

The young people’s objective was to bring a more simplified language to current issues and “translate” what traditional newspapers were communicating.

A report by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, together with the University of Oxford, identified @ac2ality as the main news profile on Tiktok in the Spanish language.

What is TikTok?

The main feature of TikTok is its video editing tool, which allows users to easily add special effects, filters, music, and captions.

Users can create their own videos or explore a wide variety of user-generated content on the platform.

Furthermore, everything is mediated by a powerful algorithm that, within a short time of use, detects exactly the subject of greatest interest to the user.

After its launch in the digital media market, TikTok stopped being just a simple video application and became one of the main advertising platforms for large companies, a work tool for content creators, among others.

The app currently has 1 billion monthly active users. Have you created your account yet?
