Some drivers have the habit of exceeding the speed limit and only braking when approaching speed cameras in an attempt to avoid fines.
However, this practice may have its days numbered thanks to new equipment being tested in the state of São Paulo and in Curitiba (PR).
Doppler: radar captures images at long distances
Unlike conventional models, which use sensors on the road to measure speed, Doppler radar operates differently. It uses electromagnetic waves emitted in the direction of vehicles.
- In turn, these waves are reflected and captured by antennas installed inside the device;
- The equipment then uses this signal to determine the current speed of the car, motorcycle or truck on the road;
- Finally, it can distinguish between inspections between nearby vehicles, avoiding confusion in the data.
A unique feature of this radar is the ability to measure the speed of vehicles before the installation point and also about 50 meters ahead. Therefore, if the driver speeds up immediately after passing the radar, he will also receive a fine.
This technology goes beyond speed monitoring and can identify other infractions, such as running a red light or changing lanes in a prohibited location, for example.
Ultimately, the goal is simple: to get drivers to respect traffic rules and speed limits, rather than slowing down just to get past the speed camera.
For now, there is no information on when this equipment will be available in other regions of Brazil.
In addition to the Doppler radar, a system based on French technology is also being tested in Curitiba to combat excessive vehicle noise.
