Netflix’s influence? Disney also intends to limit password sharing

In recent years, we have witnessed an increasing migration of studios moving further away from traditional media outlets, moving towards creating content and making it available on streaming platforms with paid subscription packages.

With increased competitiveness and content exclusivity, many users needed to purchase plans from different companies to access more complete catalogs.

Thus, the custom of password sharing among the public. This habit resulted in a drop in subscribers to these services, which led to certain actions on the part of companies. One example is Netflix, which implemented a new fee for accessing content on devices accessed from different homes.

The platform was widely questioned about this practice and heavily judged by its competitors. However, it now appears that Disney has jumped on the bandwagon and plans to limit sharing to Indian users.

According to reports released last Thursday (27), the regional streaming service of Disney in Asian countries, with a focus on India, it intends to limit the number of simultaneous accesses to the same account by 60%.

The new rules will reduce login possibilities from ten simultaneous devices to just four. These rules will apply to both Premium accounts and Super subscriptions, Disney Plus Hotstar’s most economical plan.

In this way, the company aims to increase the number of paying subscribers and increase its profits. This is due to the fact that, recently, the platform suffered a large drop in the volume of subscriptions in its main area of activity, recording more than 4 million cancellations in this year 2023 alone.

A bad example for streaming?

The practice proposed by Disney appears to be a sequence of recent actions by Disney. Netflix, which, although it brought a monetary gain to the Tudum company, had an impact on the pockets of its consumers. In Brazil, the current sharing fee is R$12.90 per device.

Furthermore, the action is worrying for the most vulnerable customers who seek greater access to services that are so popular around the world. It is also possible that other companies mirror these decisions and also adopt the limitations, significantly impacting access to digital media content.
