Meta reveals his next goal is artificial general intelligence

The race to create artificial general intelligence (AGI) is more intense than ever, with technology giants like OpenAI and Google leading the way.

Now, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, enters this competition, revealing his bold vision to build artificial intelligence that transcends human capabilities.

The mission to build artificial general intelligence

In an exclusive interview, Zuckerberg highlights the importance of designing AGI-based products to meet the Goal’s ambitions.

The businessman emphasizes the need to attract the best researchers, in a scenario where competition for AI talent is at fierce levels.

“We’ve come to this view that to build the products we want, we need to design with a focus on general intelligence,” says Zuckerberg.

This strategic move aims to direct Meta’s AI advancements directly to its billions of users.

In addition to the search for talent, Zuckerberg reveals that Meta is preparing to deal with the scarce resource in the field of AI: the computational power needed to train and run large models.

By the end of the year, Meta plans to have more than 340,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, demonstrating an unprecedented scale in processing power.

“We have built the capability to do this on a scale that may be greater than any other single company,” states Zuckerberg.

This significant investment reflects the company’s commitment Goal in leading the race for AGI.

The ethical challenge and the question of control

Control of AGI is a widely debated issue, and Zuckerberg addresses it openly, inspired by the Llama 2 model, launched by Meta last year.

While some companies adopt a more closed approach, Zuckerberg highlights the trend towards openness, believing this will resolve issues of unequal access.

The concentration of power, however, remains, but Zuckerberg sees the open approach as a means of avoiding inequalities.

He compares Meta’s dynamics with other companies that, initially open, became less transparent when they realized the value of AI.

Despite the recent focus on AI, Zuckerberg reaffirms Meta’s continued commitment to the metaverse and Reality Labs.

He sees a future in which generative AI will play a critical role in hardware efforts, enabling AI-generated virtual worlds filled with AI characters interacting with real users.

The pursuit of AGI, therefore, is not a diversion but a natural extension of the Goal’s mission to “build the future of connection.”

As Zuckerberg imagines a place where humans and AIs interact more and more, the future of Meta promises to be exciting, regardless of whether we are ready for this evolution or not.
