Three Brigham Young University students, Stephen Watts, Bridger Woods and Jeremy Mumford, share the same hobby: adventuring in mountainous areas. But on one of their adventures, the young men experienced a tense and dangerous moment when they got stuck in deep water.
Fortunately, their salvation fits in the palm of their hand. That’s right, because it was through an Apple iPhone 14 that the trio managed to save themselves.
As much as this may seem like crass advertising, it was a real experience that students went through in mid-April.
In this sense, the students were in the mountains of Utah when they got stuck in deep, icy waters in the San Rafael Swell area. The trio spent hours trapped in this location, unable to contact anyone, since the place was very remote and there was no signal. Unfortunately, the young people ended up suffering from hypothermia.
How iPhone 14 saved students’ lives?
In an interview with local television station KUTV, Mumford revealed the following:
“I went into hypothermic shock and started panicking and freezing. My teammates saw me and were very concerned.”
“We got to the point where we couldn’t get him out, they couldn’t get me out either. We had Jeremy above the rappel, hanging freely in this hole, and that’s when we realized we were stuck.”pointed out Bridger Woods.
Faced with this desperate situation, Stephen Watts remembered a feature on the iPhone, called Emergency SOS, which works via satellite.
From there, it was possible to contact local authorities via text messages and share the location.
“The canyon was about 500 meters deep with steep rock walls. Every 20 minutes, a satellite would line up where we were in the canyon, and by holding the phone up, we would get a signal. With it, we sent messages to 911 in Emery County,” Mumford stated.
Shortly after, paramedics arrived at the scene and saved the young people.
“I’ll be honest: I cried immediately when I saw the helicopter there, they were like, ‘Hey, let’s go see it’”said Woods.
“I just have so much gratitude for them and wish I had met them under different circumstances, they all seem like amazing people, but again, just a massive thank you.”added the student.
Unfortunately, this functionality is restricted to the iPhone 14. However, we expect it to multiply.
